Boy, I sure did squeeze that lemon…

Browsing the avalanche of self-help and reflective chunks of advice that is the aftermath of new year I found this great article from the Times.

George Valiant is a psychiatrist in the states who for 42 years has been studying the mental and physical wellbeing of men, picking up his work from a project he discovered that had been running since 1937.  In one of the longest and perhaps most exhaustive studies, George has discovered 7 major factors that predict healthy ageing, both physically and psychologically.

Firstly making ‘mature adaptions’, followed by education, a stable marriage, not smoking, not abusing alcohol, some exercise and healthy weight. His conclusion when asked what else have you learnt from the study was simple – “the only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people”. As one participant reflected “what’s the difference between a guy who at his final conscious moments before death has a nostalgic grin on his face as if to say, ‘Boy, I sure squeezed that lemon’ and the other man who fights for every last breath in an effort to turn back time to some unfinished business”.

You have been warned….
